 The Secret Life of Bees

I picked out this book because i heard from a few people that this was a great novel!

"The queen, for her part, is the unifying force of the community: if sjhe is removeed from the hive, the workers very quickly sense her absence. After a few hours. or even less, they show unmistakeable signs of queenlessness."

This is a quote on the first page of the novel and when i first read it, i never really understood why it was at the begging of the novel. But after finishing the novel it became more clear has to why it would start the novel. i believe it started with it because the queen was removed from Lilys life.

"T. Ray is what i called my dad because Daddy never really fit him" I picked this quote frome the novel because it really made me think alot. It made me think because when i read it i was wow, what father or dad does not fit the "daddy name" to the child. I really found this weird and differnt! Daddy should fit every dad. But to her, he didnt fit the daddy name. It made me think if it was because he didnt show the love like a daddy or she didnt feel has if he was a daddy to her. i could not picture not calling my father Tim instead of dad or daddy.

"I was unable to take my eyes off her, the Mistress of Bees, the portal into my mother"s life. August"

When lily said this quote it made me think a lot and how she said the portal into my mother's life has if she somehow knew that where she was, was going to be all she had left and all she could get from her mother.

"Because i just want to be a normal for a little while---- Not a refugee girl looking for her mother, but a regular girl paying a summer visit to tiburon, South Carolina. I want time to win August over, so she wont send me back when she finds out what i have done." When Lily said this, it made me really get to see what kind of girl she is. She just wants a normal life and does not want people to love or hate her for my past or what she has done but instead just for her and who she is.

Dear T. Ray,

I am sick to death of you yellnig at me. i am not deaf. I am only stupid for calling you up.

If you were being tortured by Martians and the only thing that coukld save you was telling then my favorite color, you would die on the spot. What was I thinking? All i had to do was remember the father's day card I made for you when i was nine and still hoping for love. Do you remember it, well of course you don't. I do, because i nearly killed myself working on it. I never told you i was up half the night with a dictionary looknig up words to go wit hthe letters in Daddy. i got the idea, not that you are interested, from Mrs. Poolewas had us do it in Sunday school wit hthe wors joy. J --- Jesus: O--- Others:Y---Yourself. Thjis is the correctorder for your life, she said , only if you follow it, you will have JOY, JOY, JOY. Well, i tried that, putting myself last left and right, and i am still waiting for Joy to show up, So the exercise was good for nothing except fot giving me the idea for your card. i thought if I spelled out the menaing of Daddy to you, it would help you along. i was trying to say, here, try these things, I will so appreciate it. i used words like DELIGHTUL, DETERMINED TO BE KIND.

I expected it to get propped on your dresser, and the next day i find it on the telephone table where you  have peeled a peach on top of it, and the skin and pit are stuck to the paper. I have always wanted to say to you that was DISPICABLE.

Writing this is not the Jesus-- Others-- Yourself philosophy of life, but it will brings me J-- O -- Y to finally say these things to your face.

                         love, lily

P.S. i do not for one half second believe my mother left me. This i put on my page because she never really gave it to her father but she got it out of her system by writing it all down on paper to make herself feel better. i do this myself a lot, either say it out lond or write it on paper and rip it into tiny pieces. It shows a lot about how lily really felt inside and how she was so unhappy with her father.

I really enjoyed this novel. I am not the kind of person who like to read or has a lot of time to sit down and just get into a book, but i found with this novel the kind, that it became hard to turn off the lights to go to bed or put it down. This novel made me stop and look at my own life and realize how special I am to live in this time period. Also made me realize how happy I really am and how great my life really is because i have a father the supports me and i still have my mother. I dont no how I could live with the burden of killing my own mother. Lily, the main girl in this novel had a father did not care for her. He was so mean to her and made her live a horrible life. Lily also, when she was a little girl killed her own mother. She loves to write and i find that alot like me. I enjoy to wirte for myself if no one else reads it because they judge it but i do like to write my feeling down on paper to let them out of my system. I feel like for alive after i get things out of my system. Lily was like that in ways that she loved to put her view on life ot her life or how life should be onto paper and i believe it was her way to get it out.

This was picture on the honey jars. This is one of the pieces left from lily's mother and it lead her to the Bee farm.

This is a picture of Grits. They are like sand and when lily got into trouble she had to kneel on grits and it would burn and leave little cuts on her knees and she wouls stay there for up to hours.

Lily whole life was centered around a bee, or bees. Just simple bees.

The Cat's Cradle

By: Kurt Vonnegut

I picked this novel to read because chase Mellon told me it was a good fast reading book and it very much was.

"Nothing in this book is true."  This is on the first page of this novel and i pick to put in on here because i found it extremely funny and thought someone might find it has funny has i did.

"Live by the foma that makes you brave and kind and healthy and happy."

This quote is on the first page of this novel has well and i found it very inspirational.

" Making that cat's cradle was the closet I ever saw my father come to playing with anybody else would call a game." This quote made me think a lot because it made me think about my owmn father and if he has really ever palyed  with anyone. Or what his weird game are or what he does. When i thought about my own father i realized that he does have his own weird things. He is a man would plays only games with have a education back ground.

" My father said. ' science has now know sin.' "  This quote I found interesting because everything out there can know sin and he believe at that time science decided to show the sin it always knew.

" If i were a younger man, I would write a history of human stupidity; and I would climb to the top of Mount McCabe and lie down on my back with my history for a pillow; and I would take from the ground some of the blue-white poison that makes statues of men; and I would make a statue of myself, lying on my back, grinning horribly, and thumbing my nose at You Know Who."

This is the last few words of the novel. It leaves you like this and i think whoever reading this should think about what it is really saying.

" We will touch our feet, yes,

Yes, for all we're worth,

And we will love each other, yes,

Yes, like we love our Mother Earth"

This quote talks about the religion Bokononists and how they believe it is impossible to be sole to sole with someone without loving them.I found it a bit weird but if that's what they believe then let it be.

Mawkishly- sickly or puerilely sentimental

Example from the novel- " I was surprised and mawkishly heartbroken

Howitzers-  a short cannon used to fire projectiles at medium muzzle velocities and with relatively high trajectories

Example from the novel- " Their trucks and tanks and howitzer are wallowing."

Swindled- To cheat or defraud of money or property.

Example for the novel- " Angela, when she got a few drinks into her, complained of how the world had swindled her father."

Demoniacal- possessed by or as by an evil spirit; raging; frantic.

Example from the novel-"TheSpiritual needs of the people caught in this demoniacal squirrel cage were taken care of by a handful of butterball priests.

Idyllic- suitable for or suggestive of an idyll; charmingly simple or rustic

Example from the Novel- "He told me of Idyllic Hours he and his Zinka had spent in eachother's arms."

Bubonic-accompanied by or affected with buboes

Example from the novel-"Some people got bubonic plague."

This was a fast reading easy to not put down novel. I found it to be a little out there with the whole world dying and ice-nine but then again it could happen if science decided to take that path, which is very scary to me. In this novel what i found to be the most entertaining was not the book alone but the chapters and how there was tons and tons of them but each chapter was from 1/2 page to maybe 3 pages long. This might be the reason i found it a fast reading book because you were not reading chapter to chapter it was more word for word. I don't want to really ruin the novel for people if they are planning on reading it because i found with everyones first reflection i read them and then i did not want to read the book because i already knew what happened. But, this novel is about a man writing a book called the day the world ends and he goes around and writes or talks to people to get some information for his book. But during it the story takes a a different way in many ways. I would recommend this novel to people who want a different type of novel to read and want a fast reading book. I promise how it ends might shock you!

This is a picture i picked because in this novel the father made a cats cradle with the string from a novel a man in prison sent to him. The novel was about the day the world would end.

I choose this picture because this is what i view when i think about ice-nice and the world freezing over. Which i am not saying happens to anyone thinking about reading this book. haha....

This is an atomic bomb going off which is what the book the day the world ends was being written about. I can see why it would be the day the world ended.

This is the Bokononism religion that you can not be sole-to-sole with someone without loving that person.

Dear John

By Nicholas Sparks

I picked this book because i got this novel for christmas and i desided to read it.. I am sure glad i did it was one of those books you can not put down.

My thoughts on this novel

This novel changed my whole outlook on reading books. I will admit i hated reading i thought it was a pointless waste of time but after reading this novel i want to just sit down and starte reading another book. It took me two days to finish this 336 page book. I am a slow reader and hated reading yet this book had a way of making me want to just read forever. I spent my lunch hour at school reading and durning the math final, by the way i love math to death, all i wanted to do was read this book. It had its ups and downs. I love love storys and happy ending and it started out to be the prefect book or in other words the prefecct love story but the more i read the more the book took a different path. The path that make me throw the book on the ground and the path that made me cry. But even though the end was not what i would have wished for it made me think a lot more about life and love. I am glad in ended the way it did because if it would have ended like the prefect love story i would not think about it has much has i do... i would not of gotten has much out of it... For anyone who what to read an amazing book Dear John is the book for you.

This is a picture i chose because its coins. Johns father had a passion for coins. He spent his whole life finding old coins and saving them. He spent most of his money on coins has like his father did. When John's grandfather died in his will he said the sell the house and all the money goes to buying more coins. Coins were the only think John and his father could ever talk about. John at a point in his life hated coins because thats all his father talked about and took him to never talk about them again. Only until Savannah came into his life and let John realize it was okay for his to talk about coins.

I chose this picture because Savannah loves horses. They are her passion. She said when she is riding horse she has time to think and be in her own world.  Horses are her escape from the real world.

By: Laurie Halse Anderson

This is a great novel. It is about Melinda who is a freshman in high school. But, the summer before her freshman year she was at a high school party and was drinking and having a party time until she was raped by a senior boy. She did not know what to do so she called the police and when people found out about her calling the police they all thought she called to call in the party not that she was raped. She never told anyone she was raped and did not know really how to deal with it. Her group of friends even stopped talking to her/ She did not even tell her family. So, in result she quiet talking and her grades went way down and she bit nails and lips until they bleed. She did not know how to handdle what happened to her. This novel is kinda like a dairy of her thoughts. She goes though a lot like weight gain, cutting classes, and cutting classes. I hate to give away the end of the novel but lets just say it takes time but she finally sticks up for herself and you would be very proud of her.

I chose this picture because she is a freshman and it kinda how freshman year is.Lost!

I chose this picture because this is a gilr passed out at a party. She got drunk and did something she wish she never did and was not all there is stick up for herself.

This is a great picture because the note is taking about rape and it goes over her mouth like her when see doesnt talk in the novel.

This picture is a bad grade on test and i chose this because in high school her grades dropped because she did not care anymore.

"I wonder how long it would take for anyone to notice if I just stopped talking."

I like this quote a lot because for me not talking people noticed really fast but for her it was differnet and i just feel the attitude in this quote.

"I need a new friend. I need a friend, period. Not a true friend, nothing close or share clothes or sleepover giggle giggle yak yak. Just a pseudo-friend, disposable friend. Friend as accessory. Just so I don't feel or look so stupid."

I chose this because everyone just needs a friend and she needed on the most.

"I want to be in fifth grade again. Now, that is a deep dark secret, almost as big as the other one. Fifth grade was easy -- old enough to play outside without Mom, too young to go off the block. The perfect leash length. "

I think everyone has felt this way before or at least i sure have. Your growing up so fast and life gets a lot harder you just want to go back to 5th grade.

"It's easier to floss with barbed wire than admit you like someone in middle school."

This is true has well, to admit you like someone can be the most painful thing.

1. We are here to help you.

2. You will have time to get to your class before the bell rings.

3. The dress code will be enforced.

4. No smoking is allowed on school grounds.

5. Our football team will win the championship this year.

6. We expect more of you here.

7. Guidance counselors are always available to listen.

8. Your schedule was created with you in mind.

9. Your locker combination is private.

10. These will be the years you look back on fondly. "

I am not sure yet if this is true but it made me smile a lot when i read it and i like people need to see her humor side.

For my book project i did not talk a full day of school because the main character did not talk because she was raped. This was a very hard project for me, it was a lot harder then any other project io have ever done. It really made me think about how hard it would be to be a person who didnt ever talk. It maybe would be differnt if i had a differnt type of personailty. it was not that hard for her because she doesnt get her engery rom talking shev gets it the oppisite way. She needs quiet to think and collect herself.

Dont Take Love Lying Down

By: Brad Henning

I Choose to read this book because of Brad Henning coming to our school and giving the great talk he did about love and relationships and i really wanted to know more so i read his novel.

About the Author

Brad Henning graduated from Seattle Pacific college in 1970 with a Bachelor of arts degree. last 30 years now Brad has worked in junior highs, high schools, and colleges doing classroom talks about relationships and abstinence. He has made a big impact on many students and mainly works in the northwest. If you are a stundent and have not seen one of his talks you need to find a place that is and go watch. He as been to the bonners ferry high school, which i go to 2 times since i have been in school and i have learned a lot.

I choose this picture beecause it shows words that teens say but do not truly know the meaning of and in this book it talks a lot how teens say things but do not really mean them or know the full meaning.

I choose these two pictures because this book talks a lot about how love is not sex or sex is not love and that you should stop having sex if you are or do not have sex until marrige so you save your body for your future husband or wife.

I choose this picture because there is a chapter in this book called girls and it talks about how girls are and why they are the way there are. I read this chapter first because that is what Brad said to do if you are a girl to understand yourself and why you do things the way you do and i really enjoyed this chaptper even though it had so mean realitys.

I choose this picture because it is a picture of boys. There is also a chapter called boys and this what the second chapter i read becuase again Brad said to. This talked a lot about the boys and how and why they do the things they do. This chapter i also enjoyed a lot because it gave me a better understanding for the male and his choice even though i can not under stand why they make them or why their brain works the way it does.

I choose this picture because it reminds a lot of reltionships and this book gives you tons or realtionship advice.

I choose this picture honsetly because it made me smile and think about Brads talk and it was a lot to deal with that was in the book.

I choose this picture because it too reminds me of the talk Brad gave to our school.

Thoughts about the book

My thoughts on this book is that everyone in there right mind that is not already married should get this book and take a few days to just read it. i can save you a lifetime of heartbreak and give you a full understanding about girls and guys and how they think differnt and make different chooses. This book also gives you a true meaning of love and what it really does mean. It will help you with relationships and talks a lot about waiting for marrige to have sex. I found it very educational and no offince to the other books i read this year, this had the most impact on me because it thought me a lot about my life today and in my future. I learned a lot about the meaning love and i really had to look on my own life to really see who i truly love. This book makes you think a lot about yourself and the people around you and your future. i mean i cant write to much here because again i hate messing up books for people but i think everyone should read this book and i almost think it should be a class novel in school. The books we need in school are very good books but this novel i believe would have a graeater impact on the students.

* "Sex is the only thing he sees in the room. The more sex(relationship), the less he will see of anything else in the relationship." - I choose this quote because Brad talks about why sex is bad in a relationship for the boys point of view and it also shows how girls and boys are differnt when it comes to relationships.

* "Your clothes are your billboard. They can define you in a moment -for better or worse. " - I choose this quote because it is a very true statement and i think the same way he does about it.

* "Married people enjoy sex more not only because thier sex partners are more available, less distracted, more eager, and more able to please, but also because marriage adds meaning to the sexual act." -  i choose this because it is a fact in this book and it find it very interseting and i think everyone should know it.

* "No pain, no gain

No gain, no goals

No goals, no scouts

No scouts, No college

No college, no cheerleaders

No cheerleader?

Get uo, man! Get up!"

I choose this because it was in the girl part talking about how nothing can motive a man more than a women and i find this to be very true.

Its early yet, the month is one,

You can't see me I've just begun.

i'm so small i don't have to hind,

i'm just a litle seed inside.

Four weeks later the month is two,

i'm so small but still a part of you.

mommy you'll love me, wait ans see.

You will be so prond of me.

time is passing the month is three.

now anybody is able to see me.

i've got black hair my eyes are brown.

mon, your gonna love having me around.

it's getting late the month is five.

mom didn't want me i'm no longer alive.

Abortion is the name they give it.

it tskes your life before you live it.

i want to be born the month is six

it's already been done it can't be fixed.

i guess mommy disn't want me because she threw me away.

i've got a new home the month is seven.

God has welcomed me back to heaven.

Youwould have loved me but now i'm gone.

now only my memory carries on.

iif i were around the month would be eight.

i know mommy would have loved me but now it's too late.

Goodbye mommy the month is nine.

if i would have been born things would have been fine.

Even though i'm in heaven i still cry.

oh mommy, why did you make me die?"

-I choose this peom from the book because i believe it is a very good peom and it goes with the chapter on sex and reasons to wait and not to have abortion.

*"if he cries, he's a wimp.

if he doesnt, he's insensitive"

- I choose this because it talks about why guys have a hard time in a relationship because he cant do anything right. This quote is a good example that guys cant do a thing right.

I wonder what we could learn if we just slowed down long enough to watch some bees work and live and create. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. I'm glad you enjoyed this book, particularly since books aren't usually your "thing." Maybe that's ready to change? What do you think of the "month" sisters?

Well they are all kinda differnt.. May is the super sensitive one or the one that crys alot and has a hard time dealing with her twins death. Ausgust is my favorite because she reminds me of my aunt and she is super loving and caring and june i dont really no about her she takes a log time to warm up and is kinda mean or comes across mean to me at least

In ways it is but then again it really is not the main point of the novel.

I like the quotations and the visual selections that relate to _Speak_. You might speak (I know, corny) in greater depth about the impact that verbal isolation has on a person. Why was the project so difficult? Does silent reflection have its place and its benefits? How might people open up avenues of communication without resorting to superficial "small talk," whether that is spoken, texted, written, or otherwise "said"?
