Poptarts!!!
Im reading Anthem by Ayn Rand. It is very weird but yet very interesting at the same time.
Ayn Rand was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in February 1905, and grew up in Russia during one of the country’s most tumultuous periods. In 1917, when she was twelve, Rand witnessed the Bolshevik Revolution, in which the Bolsheviks took control of the Soviet government, ushering in the Communist era in Russia. Her family lost its business and was reduced to a state of extreme poverty during the new regime.
It's definitely not like most of the books i have read. It takes place in the dark ages of the future and this young boy named eguality 7-2521, all the kids and people here are named or grouped by numbers, finds a tunnel and hides in it to write, which is a violation in the society. Even though he does not feel guilt for his actions, he begs the forgiveness of the ruling Council. He knows too but since he has this secret tunnel to himself he does not want to give it up. It is his own little freedom and own world to himself. As he spends more time alone, he realizes that solitude suits him, and he begins to crave more and more time by himself. From his tunnel, Equality 7-2521 records episodes from his childhood. As a child, Equality 7-2521 wanted more than anything to be a scholar. Later, Equality 7-2521 meets the Golden One, a beautiful peasant girl. He knows it's wrong but whenever he sees her he talks to her knowing there could be consequences for this, but she immediately falls in love with him.
His job that has been given to him is Street Sweeper. He accidentaly returns home late back to his home which is with the street sweepers. He refuses to tell the Home Council where he has been, so he is thrown into the Palace of Corrective Detention. There he is tortured, but still refuses to tell where he has been late at night, beacuse he wants to keep the lightbulb, he invents and discovers, a secret til he can show it to the World Council. When he breaks out out of the Palace of Corrective Detention, he heads to the World Council expecting to be reconciled with his brothers and friends. When Equality 7-2521 arrives and tells the World Council his story, they reject him out of fear and anger. It threatens to kill him and to get rid of his lightbulb. He cannot handle having his invention destroyed so he takes is and flees the city. He runs to the Uncharted Forest where he can do what he pleases. Few days later, the Golden One shows up and has followed Equaltiy 7-2521 into the woods. They live together peacefully in an abandoned home they find and he creates a new race of men who will belive in individualism.
Quotes from my novel: "It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see. It is base and evil. It is as if we were speaking alone to no ears but our own." Equality 7-2521 The people in this world cannot think for themselves. They are all told what to do.
"This was the only thing which moved, for the lips of the oldest did not move as they said; 'Street Sweeper'." Street sweeper was the job that was given to Equality 7-2521, this saddened him because all his life he had dreamed of being a scholar. Once your job is given to you, it is your job for life.

Im reading Into The Wild by John Krakauer. It is a great true life story about a man, Cristopher Johnson McCandless, who leaves his home and forgets everything and everyone behind him so he can be free all by himself to get away from civilization. He gave up $25,000 of his own money to charity before he left, and abandoned all his money in his wallet as well.
I feel this is one of the best books I have ever read and it was probably one of the most touching ones too. The way Chris just abandoned everything and left it all behind is what amazed me the most. Either that takes a lot of guts to be able to just leave your family and everything else behind like that or he had just plain gone crazy. I feel for his family because if that was my kid that just left like that I would be in shock for the rest of my life and would still be hurt to this day from it. Chris also at the same time did have a great amount of courage. Even if I had nothing else in life, I would still not be able to go deep into the wild.
Quotes from the novel: April 27th, 1992,
Greetings from Fairbanks! This is the last you shall hear from me Wayne. Arrived here 2 days ago. It was very difficult to catch rides in the Yukon Territory. But I finally got here. Please return all mail I recieve to the sender. It might be a very long time before I return South. If the adventure proves fatal and you don't hear ever from me again I want you to know you're a great man. I now walk into the wild. Alex.
This was Chris McCandless writing to Wayne Westerberg that helped him on his journey north to Alaska along the way. Chris refers to himself as Alex on his trip, Alex Supertramp. Surprisingly, all of his notes and entries made it back to civilization. Alex was one of the most bold and noble man Wayne had ever met. He thoght of Alex as one of his own.
Greetings from Seattle! I'm a hobo now! That's right, I'm riding the rails now. What fun, I wish I had jumped trains earlier. The rails have some drawbacks, however. First is that one becomes absolutely filthy. Second is that one must tangle with these crazy bulls. I was sitting in a hotshot in L.A. when a bull found me with his flashlight about 10 P.M. "Get outta ther before I KILL ya!" screamed the bull. I got out and saw he had drawn his revolver. He interrogated me at gunpoint, then growled, "If I ever see you around this train again I'll kill ya! Hit the road!" What a lunatic! I got the last laugh when I caught the same train 5 minutes later and rode it all the way to Oakland. I'll be in touch, Alex.
This is when Chris is in Seattle and he is starting to care less and less about things and just living more "free" now. He is explaining an adventure that got a little out of hand when he met this crazy man in Los Angelas. He has some interesting experiences on his way up to Anchorage, Alaska.
Some reflections I thought about in this book are why Chris did not prepare himself before he left on his trip. He could have learned some wildlife tactics first and also gotten more into shape so his body could take more of a beating and last longer in the wilderness too. I think Chris was more just so overexcited that he just wanted to leave and head out on his trip instead of thinking it all over first so he kind of in a way was being obnoxious because he just got all of his attention by leaving right away instead of thinking about what his consequences could be for heading out there without being prepared. But at the sametime he was not trying to be selfish and get attention by leaving on his trip because he was not that type of guy. He was more the type that was low key and under the radar and did not always need all the people around him to have fun and enjoy life. He found ways to entertain himself and keep busy with his own life so he was not the self-centered, selfish kid like some other 24 year old college kids.

Quotes:
"I didn't think you would. You're Mike Johnson's son through and through. You're going to end up just like your father. The talent of an all star, the attitude of a punk. I've seen that smirk on your face for too long. I've seen it and I'm sick of it. I'm not having bad actors poisoning my team. So you think it over, Mr. All-Star Mick Johnson. You want to play for me, then you practice the way I want you to practice. If not, don't come back. Now go sit in the bleachers until the end of practice."
This is a quote from Coach Rooney who said this to Mick Johnson. Mick was very lazy his first two years in high school because he was the best and did not think he needed to work hard in practice. But from his coach he learned you have to work hard in practice to get playing time...
He shook his head and snorted in disgust. "You're plenty good enough. But now this whole season, everything we supposedly did, it's all ruined. You cheated, Mick. You were the main man, and you flat-out cheated. We don't belong in the playoffs; we didn't win a thing."
This is what Mick's friend, Drew says to him and in a way it makes Mick feel a little better because he knew what he was doing with steroids was wrong. Then having his friend come and talk to him about it and saying he will still be with him through everything and will still be friends with him so inside Mick felt better about someone finding out so he did not have to come out and say it himself.

Well, I'll ignore the kangaroo and chihuahua discussion as best I can. As far as _Anthem_ is concerned, I find it curious: Ayn Rand experienced the destruction of the individual in the collectivist revolution in the Soviet Union. Then, here, she saw the slow dessication of the individual in the malaise of our 20th century "rise" to power. _Anthem_ is the proverbial tip of the _Atlas Shrugged_ and _The Fountainhead_ Ayn Rand iceberg.

What about some reflections about your book? Think of what you discussed in the interview--plot twist at the end, theme of never giving up, importance of friendship, etc. Let's try something besides LOL.
